Not so cool

Recently (in my review of The Orange Box) I wrote approvingly about downloading games through the Steam store. I stand by the majority of what I wrote; but at the time I had failed to note that the pricing of games on Steam is excessively high.

This was brought to my attention when I went to buy Call of Duty 4 online. It was and still is priced at $69.95 plus tax, which works out at around $80. That converts into about £40. Compare £40 on Steam with £25 on Amazon UK and I was forced to buy a hard copy.

I want to buy Company of Heroes with the Opposing Fronts expansion soon. The combined price on Steam is going to work out at over £30. Weigh that against Company of Heroes: Gold Edition on Amazon, which is on sale for £18. Another no-brainer.

Online downloading has so much going for it. It’s surely the future of the computer games market. What needs to be done to solve this pricing problem? The fools that are in charge of pricing on Steam must be fired and replaced with dudes. Simple.
